Andrea Skowronek received her B.F.A. in Dance from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. After graduation, Andrea performed in Paris, France with “Free Dance Song” (Katherine Dunham technique) under the direction of Christine de Rougemont. A native of Seattle, Washington, Andrea settled in Kansas City in 1984 and apprenticed with The Susan Warden Dancers. She has danced with City in Motion Dance Theater and taught at the City in Motion School of Dance since it was founded in 1986. Andrea became Co-Artistic Director of City in Motion and Director of the Children’s Dance Theater in 1995. She has produced choreography for the Country Club Christian Church, American Heartland Theater and the “Broadway at Baker” summer program at Baker University for Musical Theater for Young People. Her choreography has been performed with the Kansas City Symphony at the Lyric Theater for their Family Series in conjunction with Musical Theater for Young People. Andrea has been on the dance faculties of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory and Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas. She has performed with the Missouri Repertory Theatre, Missouri Chamber Orchestra, the Soni Ventorium Wind Quintet, and aha! dance theatre.

Penelope Hearne

Penelope Hearne is enjoying her second season as Co-Artistic Director and company member of City in Motion Dance Theater.. She received her B.F.A. in Dance in 2006 from the University of Kansas in Lawrence and has trained at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, The Alvin Ailey School in New York City, and Middlesex University in London. She also has studied Balinese dance from the Kansas City Gamelon Genta Kasturi. Penelope began her training at the City in Motion School of Dance and grew up performing in the Children's Dance Theater. She has taught dance at Penn Valley Community College, the City in Motion School of Dance, Kansas City Young Audiences, and The Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. In the spring of 2007, she also performed as a guest artist with The 940 Dance Company in Lawrence, Kansas. Penelope has directed, produced and collaborated on several independent performances with visual artists, musicians, aerialists and dancers from Lawrence, Kansas City, Chicago and New York. Penelope is continuously amazed by, and curious about, all the many exciting avenues of modern dance, and wants to thanks City in Motion for all their support and generosity from day one.

Dale Fellin

Dale Fellin began his career in movement at age of 14, teaching gymnastics and trampoline. By age 18, he was promoted to head coach of a competitive gymnastics team in Springfield, Missouri, and at age 23 he became a certified United States Gymnastics Federation judge. Dale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Missouri State University in 1991. While in college, and coaching gymnastics, Dale performed in various stage productions with Springfield Little Theater and Springfield Ballet, including A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, Peter and the Wolf, and The Nutcracker. Dale has worked as a dancer for the city of Springfield, Missouri and its city-wide First Night-New Year’s Eve Celebration, for the Jimmy Rodgers Theater in Branson, Missouri, and for Central Dance Theater in Omaha, Nebraska. Dale also worked as a Dancer and served as Dance Director for the well known Shoji Tabuchi Theater in Branson, Missouri from 1992 to 1999. In addition to his dance study with Springfield Ballet and Missouri State University, Dale has studied with The Joel Hall Dancers, Hubbard Street Dance, and River North Dance, all of Chicago, Illinois, as well as the Chi-Town Jazz Dancers of Evanston, Illinois. Dale joined City in Motion Dance Theater in January of 2004 and became a Co-Artistic Director in January of 2007.

Stephanie Whittler

Stephanie Whittler began her dance training in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of two. She has attended various schools, where her studies included the teachings of the Royal Academy of Dance, the American Academy of Ballet, Cecchetti, Horton, Ailey, and Graham, to name a few. She has worked with local choreographers, such as Harlan Brownlee, Karah Abiog, and David Ollington, and has performed with the Gateway Ballet of St. Louis, Kansas City Ballet, Minnesota Ballet, and Body Cartography Kansas City. In 1999, Stephanie received a scholarship to the Conservatory of Music at UMKC, where she studied extensively with Paula Weber, Mary Pat Henry, DeeAnna Hiett, and Katherine Plavcan, to obtain a BFA with an emphasis in ballet performance. Her musical theater credits include performances in Gypsy, The King & I, Seven Brides for Seven Bothers, Jesus Christ Superstar, and choreographer for Little Shop of Horrors. Stephanie has been a professional dancer with City in Motion Dance Theater for the last five years and is in her second season with Reach…A Movement Collective Inc. In addition, she is an instructor at Penn Valley Community College, City in Motion, a member of the the City in Motion Board of Directors, and teaches Canine Freestyle and Doga at The Dogs' Spot.

 

Faculty Biographies

Malinda Crump

Malinda Crump is a graduate of Webster University where she received a BFA in Dance and a BA in psychology. She has had additional dance training from Nora Reynolds-Daniels, Gabe Masson and Kim Epifano. Malinda danced with aha! dance theatre for two years before joining the Prairie Wind Dancers. She has also worked with local chorographer Michelle Diane Brown and recently co-directed an independent dance performance with Penelope Hearne in Kansas City. Her choreography has been performed by the CIty in Motion Apprentice Company and Ballet North. She currently teaches at the City in Motion School of Dance and the Classical Ballet School.

 

Lillian Francis

Ms. Francis began her dance training in Tampa, Florida with Frank Rey. She was a member of the Florida Ballet Theatre and danced roles in several ballets, including the Nutcracker, Scintilla, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and Russian Suite. Ms. Francis also spent three seasons as a dancer for Busch Entertainment, appearing daily at Busch Gardens in Tampa. Ms Francis continued her dance studies while pursuing a business degree at the University of Illinois. Ms. Francis has been teaching since 1990 and is certified by the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters in ballet, jazz and tap. She built a ballet program from the ground up for a local studio and helped dozens of students to develop as dancers. At City in Motion, she currently teaches ballet and jazz and brings laughter and learning to her classes.

 

Kathleen Kingsley

A dancer all her life, Kathleen Kingsley has been a dance educator for over twenty years, performing and conducting dance residencies in schools and communities throughout the US. In 1985 she co-founded City in Motion Dance Theater in Kansas City, Missouri. As co-artistic director she developed the children’s program and directed the Children’s Dance Theater for six years. Kathleen's early training was with the Minnesota Dance Theatre. She later performed with companies in Colombia, South America. She was a soloist with the Tampa Ballet, and danced and choreographed for several companies before founding and touring with City in Motion. She is a lecturer in the Department of Education at Highlands University, currently teaches dance classes and workshops at the United World College, conducts residencies and teacher workshops throughout the state, and is involved in developing the dance program at the new Rio Gallinas Charter School in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Her current directions have been influenced by her studies with Anne Green Gilbert of the Creative Dance Center in Seattle, and with Sandra Dillon of the Multisensory Language Training Institute of New Mexico. Kathleen resides in Tecolote, New Mexico.

Jennifer Otto



Jennifer Otto began her dance career in Carroll, Iowa, and studied under Debera Quandt for 12 years. She continued her training at the University of Iowa in 1998, graduating with an Honors BFA in Dance in December 2002.
While at UI, she performed for visiting choreographers Lar Lubovitch, Nicholas Leichter and David Capps, along with many works by the current faculty and students. She was a member of Dancers in Company, a touring ensemble at Iowa, in 2001 and 2002. She attended ADF in summer 2002 and performed in Donald McKayle’s Ashes while studying there. In February 2003, she made her first appearance with Charlotte Adams and Dancers in NYC followed by an appearance in Iowa with Duarte Dance Works in the summers of 2003 and 2004. She is currently in her second season performing with aha! dance theatre.
Her teaching experience started in Iowa, nine years ago, where she taught for local studios and high schools. In Kansas City, she continues teaching for her second year at the schools of City in Motion, Community School of the Arts, and Ibsen Dance Theatre.

Samantha Putthoff

Samantha Putthoff began her dancing career with City in Motion's Children's Dance Theater. She then joined City in Motion's Apprentice Company. Samantha has been performing with City in Motion for eleven years. She has been a member of City in Motion's faculty since the 2003 summer session, and is pleased to continue teaching this year.

 

M. Suzanne Ryan

M. Suzanne Ryan began dancing professionally at the age of 19 under Neil Hess, director of the Lone Star Ballet. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance from the
University of New Mexico. Suzanne’s choreography has been performed in six U.S. states and internationally.
In 2003 she was awarded a mini-fellowship in Choreography from the Kansas Arts Commission. Locally, she performed as a member of aha! dance theater,
Reach...a movement collective inc., and MDB: Dance. She recently founded Ryanstrati & Co. an integrated company using dancers in wheelchairs, which has
performed at KC's major theatres including JCCC's Yardley Hall and the Folly Theater, to name a few. Suzanne works as an instructor of dance at The Culture
House and KCYA's Community School for the Arts.
