The City in Motion School of Dance, under the direction of Regina Compernolle, is located at 3925 Main Street (2nd floor). Classes for children and adults include modern dance, ballet, jazz and creative movement. Adult workshops may include such diverse disciplines as Belly Dancing, Flamenco, West African, Salsa, Hip-Hop, Swing and Kung Fu.
City in Motion is a school of dance, centrally located in Kansas City, that is built on the philosophy that everyone is a dancer. For over 17 years, it has boasted a professional faculty, offering a wide assortment of dance, movement exercise techniques, and providing classes for all levels of dancers – novice through professional.

Faculty
Regina received her B.A. in psychology and art from U.M.K.C. in 1985. She has worked to coordinate art and education programs for a variety of organizations, including Kansas City Parks and Recreations summer art program and Mother Earths Workshop, a cooperative homeschool. She was artist in residence with Heartland All Species Project's annual Earth Day Project. Her duties included outdoor theatrical production, creating giant puppets, mask-making, costuming and performance. Regina was the proprietor of Sacred Earth Arts, a gallery and education center for local artists. Regina studied traditional Brazilian dance in Salvador, Bahia and Samba with Ann-Marie Draeger at City in Motion. Regina performed/choreographed Afro-Brazilian dance with Traditional Music Society for 10 years. She is the director of Women of the Drum percussion and dance ensemble. Regina has been involved with City in Motion since 1986 in a variety of capacities and is the current school director.

Mrs. Carson, a graduate with distinction from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Dance Division and LAcademia del Arte-Barcelona, Spain has been a teacher and presenter of flamenco and the Spanish culture for over 25 years. Because of her experience as an educator and working artist, Tamara was appointed to the Missouri Arts Council from 1994-1999 and served on the Alumni Board of the Conservatory of Music at UMKC from 2004-2009. Her choreographic works include time spent with the Kansas City Lyric Opera, the Chamber Ballet of Williamsburg, Virginia and the Universities of Kansas and Missouri. Mrs. Carson currently teaches flamenco at City In Motion and has since 1988 and at the Kansas City Ballet, performs with Viva Flamenco as a guest artist and is the Director of Ole Music and Dance of Spain. Tamara Carson
Lillian was raised in Tampa , FL where she studied dance at the Frank Rey School for 9 years. She was a dancer with the Florida Ballet Theatre for 2 years, and at Busch Gardens theme park for 3 seasons. She continued her dance studies at The University of Illinois while majoring in Business Administration. She is a member of The Chicago National Association of Dance Masters and holds teaching certifications in ballet, jazz and tap. Lillian is also certified in Pilates matwork. Upon moving to Kansas City in 1993 she built a ballet program at JoCindas School of Dance and taught there for 9 years. She also has taught at Eagles Gymnastics & Dance. Mrs Francis currently teaches for City in Motion and ACT1. She recently has choreographed for the CIM Childrens Dance Theatre, ACT1 as well as the KC Fringe Festival.

Amanda January received a B.F.A. in Dance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She has danced with The 940 Dance Company in Lawrence, Kansas and Trapdoor Slippers and Warehouse Dance in Kansas City. She has been to summer intensive programs at the Alvin Ailey School and with Mark Morris. She trained at American Dance Center and Leigh's School of Dance in Kansas. Recently, Amanda choreographed "Meet Me in St. Louis" for Grandview High School. Amanda is also a dance instructor at Academy Dance in Grandview, MO as well as City in Motion.

Andy Parkhurst is a teacher, choreographer, musical theatre performer and dancer as well as Managing Director of Kansas City's newest professional theatre company, Spinning Tree Theatre. On Broadway, Andy assisted Tony Award-winning choreographer Rob Ashford on Curtains and performed on the 2009 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall. Andy was Dance Captain and Swing of the Broadway tour of Mamma Mia! for over 2,000 performances and has performed as featured dancer across the USA and Europe. A proud member of Actors' Equity Association, an associate of the Society of Directors and Choreographers and teaching artist for Coterie Theatre, Andy has a BFA in Modern Dance from Texas Christian University.

M. Suzanne Ryan studied under Todd Bolender at the Kansas City Ballet School. At the age of 19 she had her first professional dance job under Neil Hess in Texas. At 21 she studied contemporary dance (Limon and Evans) and toured with the Bill Evans Dance Company. Suzanne studied with George de la Pena, Alan Sener, David Dorfman, Tyrone Aiken, and Bella Lewitsky. Suzanne attended the Bill Evans Teacher's Summer Intensive and holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Dance Choreography from the University of Iowa, where she taught modern dance for 3 years. Locally she was a member of aha! dance theater, a guest with Storling Dance Theatre, and performed in Michelle Diane Brown's Dance: Simply Artful project. Her choreography has been performed in City in Motion's Modern Night at the Folly and Dance in the Park as well as in eight other states and internationally.
Suzanne Ryan
Ann Shaughnessy, a Kansas City native, began dancing at age 14, taking classes from Donna Des Marteau, Becky Lucas, Liz Dimmel, and Tobin James. She started teaching at 19 and continued her dance training at UMKC where she received a BFA in Dance with honors in 2002. Ann has performed and taught in and around the Kansas City area for about 12 years: She has performed with Dramatic Truth Dance Theater, a-ha! Dance Theater, Reach...A Movement Collective, and more recently for independent choreographers such as Tiffany Sisemore, Tuesday Faust, and Jane Gotch. She has taught at many local schools and studios including Community School for the Arts, Kansas City Ballet, Penn Valley, UMKC, Carnegie Arts Center in Leavenworth, Dancerz Unlimited, and currently at Tiffany Performing Arts Center. Ann has taught at City in Motion since 2005 when she also first joined the City In Motion Dance Theater, and has choreographed for both the company and the Children's Dance Theater. Ann is proud to celebrate her 5th year teaching at the school and thrilled to be back with the company for her 3rd season!

Andrea Skowronek received her B.F.A. in Dance from Stephens College, in Columbia, Missouri. A native of Seattle, Washington, she received her early dance training from the Cornish Institute. Andrea performed in Paris, France with Free Dance Song (Katherine Dunham technique) under the direction of Christine de Rougemont. She apprenticed with the Susan Warden Dancers in Kansas City, Kansas and has danced with City in Motion Dance Theater, in Kansas City, Missouri since it was founded in 1985. Andrea became an Artistic Co-Director of City in Motion in 1995 and has since choreographed over 20 new works for the company. Andrea is currently on the faculty of the City in Motion School of Dance and St. Teresas Academy. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance and St. Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas.
In 2009, Andrea was an artist-in-residence at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. She has performed with the Susan Warden Dancers, aha ! dance theatre, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Missouri Chamber Orchestra, and the Soni Ventorium Wind Quintet. Andrea is also the Director of the City in Motion Childrens Dance Theater.

Stephanie Whittler received a scholarship to attend the Conservatory of Music and Dance at UMKC and obtained a BFA with an emphasis in ballet performance. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Stephanie’s early instruction included Beutell’s School of Dance and Audrain Ballet Academy where she participated in examinations with the Royal Academy of Dance, the American Academy of Ballet, and the Cecchetti Council of America. Throughout her 26 years of dance, she has performed with the Gateway Ballet of St. Louis, Kansas City Ballet, Minnesota Ballet, Lake Area Performing Arts Guild, Body Cartography Kansas City, Starlight Theater, and Reach…A Movement Collective. Most recently, her choreography includes “Transcendence”, “Dysmorphia”, “Blind Sheep”, and “Lost(Myself)”. Stephanie is in her seventh season with City in Motion Dance Theater and is now an Artistic Co-Director with the Company. In addition, she is an instructor at Penn Valley Community College, Secretary on the CIM Board of Directors, and her love of animals has led her to teach Canine Freestyle and Doga at The Dogs' Spot.

Michelle has been a student at City In Motion since 2005, and has been a volunteer for nearly as long. She takes pride in being the oldest student on pointe, and the oldest Kung Fu student. Michelle also produces dance shows, dances in others' productions, and teaches performance arts in UMKC's ACED program. Mike Strong, Kansas City's premier dance photographer, has described her in print as "irrepressible", and credits her as the inventor/choreographer of the Goth Hula.

An outgrowth of the School of Dance is the Children's Dance Theater. These young dancers pursue professional-track training and work with local and regional choreographers on pieces of artistic merit. Many Children's Dance Theater members receive scholarships for their training. Students are recruited through auditions at the beginning of the school year and are awarded on the basis of need, interest and talent. Are you able to sponsor a young dancer?
