COVID-19 can't stop us from moving.
To our Stakeholders,
It with heavy hearts that we come to you to announce the temporary closure of City in Motion after Summer Session finishes this August. Despite our hardest efforts, we have found ourselves in a position that has left us unsure on how we can continue to keep our doors open. Protecting the health and safety of our dancers, teachers, and community has left us mutually decided to close our doors until further notice. As board member Jacob Swaney so eloquently put it, “[We are not closing], we’re on an intermission.”
At no fault to anyone, and despite our studio safety guidelines, we experienced positive exposures of COVID-19 in our school during Summer Session (all affected students have already been notified).
We knew we might have to make this call. Starting Monday, July 27, all summer classes are going virtual via Zoom. If you weren't able to take a class, now is the time! $20 gets you 4 zoom dance classes in any of our current offerings, simply donate on our website! Please see newly modified schedule online and below. If you have questions about a class, a refund, anything... please email firstname.lastname@example.org
School of Dance
To quote our current School Director, Tracie Jensen, “We are a people. We are not a brick and mortar, we are not a basement, and we are not a dance floor. We are a people.”
That being said, many of you know and love Tracie, as your teacher, fellow dancer, volunteer coordinator, and so much more. For her dedication, tenacity, and persistence during a time when coordinating a school of dance is next to impossible, we thank her. Tracie will be stepping down as School Director of City in Motion after Summer session, still active as Co-Artistic Director of our Professional Dance Company.
There are many unknowns the Board of Directors is facing in the next few months, which has ultimately lead us to make the decision to not renew our lease with Plexpod Westport Commons for the coming Fall as part of the temporary closure. The team at Plexpod has been huge partners of City in Motion, believing in our mission and supporting our ability to bring dance to everyBODY. It is our every intention to return to Plexpod when it is safe and we are financially sound.
Youth Dance Theater
With announcement of these decisions, we realize this disrupts the natural calendar of an integral part of CIM... our Youth Dance Theater. At this time, we are postponing our YDT Auditions in August, and plan on hosting listening sessions with parents, families, and teachers on possible outcomes and future plans. Please stay tuned.
Dance in the Park
For over 20 years, City in Motion has had the honor of hosting the annual Dance in the Park at Roanoke Park, every Saturday after Labor Day. After much analysis and deliberation, we must cancel this year’s Dance in the Park. We’re sure this is no surprise to any of our supporters, given the recent rise in COVID cases in our city.
Each year’s performance of Dance in the Park has brought an incredible fusion of Kansas City dance talent and diversity. But there is something that we care more about than our love for dance. It is the health and safety of our audience and performers. Yes, this event would be outdoors, yes, we could try and distance, but what we couldn't account for, is the 3-4 weeks of rehearsal and preparation that we are not only asking of our dancers and company, but of others around the city.
Rest assured, we will continue planning and collaborating for the next Dance in the Park in a post-COVID environment and we hope you will join us. For your patience and understanding in this tough call we’ve had to make, thanks. In the interim, our team would like to livestream past performances from Dance in the Park on our Facebook & Youtube pages on the originally scheduled date of September 12.
Should you feel inspired to support a future Dance in the Park performances, please check out the volunteer and donate links on our website.
At the end of the day...
Dance is (and will always be) for everyBODY.
Please be patient with us, and know that while COVID19 won't last forever, we believe that City in Motion will. We invite our community stakeholders to weigh in, offer ideas, and concerns to the stakeholder survey below. In the coming months, we hope to host a community forum, where we can address forward momentum of this organization. Thank you always, for your continued support!
