About The Event

City in Motion Dance Theater will present its professional company concert, Arrivals and Departures, on Saturday, April 27 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, April 28 at 2:00 PM at the City Stage Theater at Union Station. This marks Tracie Jensen’s inaugural season as an Artistic Co-Director of City in Motion Dance Theater. Ms. Jensen will be presenting her group piece “S and M”, with music by The Books, which premiered at A Modern Night at the Folly on February 2, 2019. “S and M” is a look at how we are influenced mentally, physically and emotionally by social media. Ms. Jensen will also present a trio about the women’s call to carry the torch forward for the next generation. This trio will be a collaboration with City in Motion Dance Theater veteran Bobbi Foudree and guest dance artist Ann Shaughnessy, with music by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. Artistic Co-Director, Andrea Skowronek will be presenting an archival piece and two new works. “Time Sequence”, which premiered at A Modern Night at the Folly in 2006, is a group piece choreographed to a score by Toshi Ichiyanagi and arranged by local composer, Jeffrey Ruckma. It is inspired by whirling dervishes and the concept of reaching enlightenment or transcendence through the physical motion of turning. A new work, “Midnight at the Vanguard”, was inspired by the composition Open Mind, composed by Gabriel Vianello, Ms. Skowronek’s son. A solo, “Monday Morning”, with music written by John Phillips and recorded by the iconic Mama’s and the Papa’s, will be an amusing piece about not wanting to get out of bed on a Monday morning. Guest choreographer, Kyle Mullins, will premiere his group piece, “Re-new”, with music by Max Richter. “Re-new” is an exploration of new beginnings. It celebrates the cyclical reexamination of one’s life and world through physical sensation, patterns, and the connections we forge between ourselves and our worlds. Veteran City in Motion Dance Theater member, Bobbi Foudree, will present her new work “Le Coup de Foudre” (the Lightning Strike of Love). This piece premiered at Open Stage at the J, at the White Theatre, Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, on March 3, 2019. Opening the performance will be “Esprit de Corps” choreographed by Kyle Mullins especially for the City in Motion Youth Dance Theater (Apprentice Company).
