About The Event

In an exciting new partnership, the Linwood YMCA/James B. Nutter Sr Community center will be a Satellite Dance Studio offering free dance classes to Kansas City's urban core in partnership with City in Motion Dance Theater. This Dance Satellite program is intentionally designed to offer access to youth and residents of the Linwood Corridor. According to the 2022-2027 Kansas City Community Health Improvement Plan, this area has the city's lowest life expectancy of 68.1 years and the population is 86.1% minorities. By forming innovative creative partnerships, the Dance Satellite project will bring dance to these Kansas City residents at no-cost. Beyond free classes, this program involves training, performance opportunities, apprenticeships, and fellowship to youth participants. CIM's professional teaching staff and programming would reflect the cultural demographic of the area, offering both technical and cultural dance styles for adults and kids on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The program will kick off with a launch event on Tuesday, March 14 at 3:30 PM at the Linwood YMCA with remarks by leaders of both organizations. The launch is open to the public, and will include dance demonstrations, enrollment support, and much more!

Currently in its 37th season, City in Motion Dance Theater and School of Dance has provided a welcoming, non-competitive environment for students of all ages to learn a variety of dance styles. “This Dance Satellite program will engage Kansas Citians, regardless of age, income or background—to nurture their creative potential and well-being through high-quality artistic education and access.” says Lydia Knopp, Board President at City in Motion Dance Theater

This Dance Satellite program is made possible by the Health Forward Foundation. For more information about class offerings, visit
